My take on him is that he's too much into the pose of being a 'curmudgeon'. Or, to put it another way, I think he's one of those fools who like to strike the "a pox on both their houses" pose ... and thereby demonstrate his superiority to mere mortals who believe this or that.
A thousand years ago, our cultural ancestors prayed, "From the fury of the Northmen, Lord, protect us!"

Today, we ought to pray, "From the tender mercies and caring solicitude of the Good Intentioned, Lord, protect us!"

Oh well, the "curmudgeon" thing surely is a pose, but I think he makes more sense than most mainstream columnists.
As for "a pox on both their houses", that sounds like the libertarian attitude to liberals and conservatives (or Democrats and Republicans).
