Problem ... Letters to Hannah: The wages of sin
I think I now (finally) understand why Mr Egerer has rejected Christianity; and it turns out to be the most common of reasons.

Love your neighbor makes you paranoid? Huh?
Mr Egerer's rejection of Christianity is built primarily on a combination of these three things --
1) refusal to admit that he himself is a sinner -- or, to paraphrase Chesterton, "What's wrong with the world is me!"
2) refusal to acknowledge that he himself can do *nothing* to make himself righteous;
3) refusal to trust that God is good/faithful.
... thus, he sees both "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength" and "Love your neighbor as yourself" as paranoia-inducing, rather than, among other things, a reminder/command to stop lying to yourself about yourself.
