I'm glad they didn't throw the book at him. The poor guy is not a criminal, but just a bit (read: a lot) eccentric.
I do have a great deal of sympathy with the people who were frightened by his nocturnal forays. Wasn't at all fair to them. I'm sure if he had made his wishes to be a hermit known, people would have gladly helped him out without the break ins.
While I certainly can sympathize with him (and especially his dislike of being around other people), I didn't at all agree with the mindeset that "all he did was steal stuff". No, he stole parts of people's lives; he used other people as *things*.
A thousand years ago, our cultural ancestors prayed, "From the fury of the Northmen, Lord, protect us!"
. . .
Today, we ought to pray, "From the tender mercies and caring solicitude of the Good Intentioned, Lord, protect us!"
